Capital Projects Article WebTMA5

The Capital Project module is used to plan large projects performed by outside entities.

A Capital Project is a project that requires the investment of a large amount of capital. A project is classified as capital if total expenditure on the project exceeds $50,000.

A capital project can be either a new build, acquisition of land or property, lease of property, the refurbishment of an existing building or the purchase of a new piece of equipment. If the project relates to a building then it must be for a single building and enhance the value of that building.

In accounting terms, the total costs of the project will be charged to the Balance Sheet and released to the Income and Expenditure account over the life of the asset created, i.e., depreciated. A refurbishment project can be depreciated over its expected useful life, which may be up to 20 years.
